Leadership Topics
t’s interesting how many companies, large and
small, have no plan for developing new leaders or helping with the transition into leadership roles.
Providing training in leadership topics and other management training is crucial to the success of
an organization. Corporations do somewhat better than small businesses. They often have
better hiring practices, maintain higher standards, and provide personnel development training when
needed. But they still could do a lot more.

When new leaders don't get the help they need with their new responsibilities, they
take longer to get to where they're contributing more than their cost. We expect new
employees to go through a period of learning, and most organizations allow for it during the first few
weeks on the job. But leadership topics take time to learn and these grace periods don't allow
enough time if employees are simply left to fend for themselves.
Even when a new recruit arrives with decent leadership skills, it’s challenging to:
- learn the organization’s culture,
- identify and build relationships with key players,
- establish credibility,
- develop a vision for progress and
- create a plan to move the organization in new directions.
Whenever a new manager or leader enters an organization, a period of transition begins. If
there's no process for dealing with this transition, the new leader could fail, and the organization
may be severely impaired during the period of recovery that follows.
When there's no transition plan, the new leader has to create one, along with a self
development plan to grow his or her leadership skills. With a good transition plan, the leader can take
charge and begin making valuable contributions more quickly than without one. With a good self development plan
that includes topics in leadership, the leader can grow on the job, take on more responsibility, and make
even greater contributions.
In leadership topics and articles on these pages, we discuss ways that new leaders can help insure
successful transitions and maintain positive growth in themselves and the organization they lead.
